IRS Forms

Hello-

Ring has just ordered a new batch of IRS forms.  Hopefully, they will arrive within 10 business days and will provide our customers with the information they need.  Among those items ordered are the 1040 EX and 1040A instruction books.  If anyone requests these items, please tell them than an order has been placed and, hopefully, the items will be received within two weeks.

Fire Drill

Thanks to all for the oustanding Fire Drill we conducted today.  Gwen Walter, HPL's Safety Officer, was very pleased with our results of getting the building evacuated in 1 minute and 5 seconds.  Great job!!

Ring's Grand Opening Celebration

The Ring Neighborhood Library celebrated its Grand Opening on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The event was planned and hosted by the Houston Public Library Foundation.

Distinguished guests are as follows:

Brenda Stardig - Houston City Council Member, District A
Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson - Houston Public Library Director
Harriet Calvin Lattimer - First Vice-Chair, Houston Public Library Foundation

Special Guests:

Peter and Ann Brown - Former Houston City Council Member and Wife
Anne Schlumberger Brown - The Anchorage Foundation of Texas

Also noted is that many Houston Public Library Foundation members, Houston Public Library staff and local community members were in attendance.

Facility improvements include the addition of a meeting room, a wonderful new front entrance, accessibility upgrades and a fiberoptic Internet connection. Other upgrades include, but are not limited to, parking lot upgrades, new flooring, an aesthetically pleasing mixture of refurbished and new furniture and new slat wall accessories to be used for attractive displays.

The Ring Neighborhood Library staff wishes to thank everyone who directly contributed or supported the library's renovation.  We are extremely excited and look forward to serving our customers in our newly renovated facility!

PC Reservation Policy Change

HPL has changed the policy regarding time usage for PC reservations. There is no longer a two hour per day time limit. Customers must still place reservations for one hour at a time sessions and must wait there turn.

Ring's Closure

Here are the most recent updates:

Ring is scheduled to close on Saturday, September 5th

All ILL items and holds will be removed and transfered to HIL. This will take place late Saturday aftnernoon, September 5th or Tuesday, September 8th.

Upon closing, all AV, uncatologed paper backs and Large Print items will be boxed and sent to Jungman.

Next week, September 8th - 11th, we will all be working from 9-6, not 9:15 - 6:15.

Everyone will be off on Saturday, September 12th.

We will all report to our new locations on Monday, September 14th. However, the new reporting locations are still unknown. Please be prepared for your Saturday rotation to be altered as we transition into our new locations. Flexibilitity is the key!!

On Thursday, September 10th, we will be having a staff lunch. Ring has a Kroger gift card that has $22 remaining we will use for this purpose. If anyone would like to bring something in addition to this, please feel free. Everyone will be here that day, so this is an excellent opportunity to do this.

Ring's Closure

Ring is scheduled to close to the public on Saturday, September 5th. Here are the latest updates and instructions:

All items customers place on hold will continue to arrive at Ring through Friday, September 4th. After that, all items will be directed to HIL. Any items remaining on Ring's shelves will be taken to HIL on September 5th.

If any customers inquire about the closure, tell them that Sept 5th is the target date, but that it may change. Also, tell them that the target date for reopening is June 2010, but that may also change. There have been a couple of customers request more details. If they do, please direct them to me. If I am not available, please take their contact information and give to me. I will respond to them ASAP.

As soon as I know, I will inform everyone where they will be assigned to work during Ring's closure.

Also, we will being taking items down, packing them and sending them off for storage as needed.

As always, thanks for your hard work, patience and flexibility during this transition period. My goal is to make it as smooth as possible for everyone!!
